Mayor de Blasio Signs Bill Establishing Brand-New Office of Nightlife

In October, Mayor de Blasio signed legislation creating the Office of Nightlife, which will serve as a central point of contact between City agencies, the nightlife industry, and city residents, promoting a vibrant and safe nightlife scene. The Office of Nightlife will be housed at MOME, with a Senior Executive Director (known colloquially as the 'Nightlife Mayor') overseeing the effort.

MOME Unveils "James M. Nederlander Alley"

On November 8, Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) Commissioner Julie Menin proclaimed the New York Marriott Marquis breezeway as "James M. Nederlander Alley" in honor of the late Broadway giant. The newly-named alley is marked by a commemorative street sign on 46th Street, steps from Broadway and within sight of several Nederlander theatres.



Her Big Idea" Returns to NYC Life for Season Two

"Her Big Idea," the hit show profiling successful women entrepreneurs in New York City, is back for a second season. The groundbreaking program highlights achievements of some of New York's most inspiring businesswomen, ones who turned a great idea into a thriving enterprise from the ground up. New York City leads the nation in the number of women entrepreneurs, giving the half-hour show plenty of subjects. Tune in Mondays at 8:30 PM for new episodes.



Seth Meyers Receives MOME Spotlight Award

MOME Commissioner Julie Menin presented Seth Meyers, host of "Late Night with Seth Meyers," with the office's Spotlight Award, for inspiring and nurturing the careers of other writers. MOME created The Spotlight Award to celebrate excellence in the film, TV, music, publishing, digital content, and advertising sectors. The award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the growth of NYC's thriving media and entertainment industries.

First Deputy Commissioner Kai Falkenberg Participates in Fast Company's Innovation Festival

First Deputy Commissioner Falkenberg recently represented MOME at "What's Next for Virtual Reality," as part of Fast Company's Innovation Festival. The conversation revolved around emerging technologies, applications, and economics of the emerging virtual reality and augmented reality ecosystem. Kai discussed plans for the first-ever publicly-funded VR/AR lab in the country, which will be housed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The lab will provide space, technology, and funding for startup companies, host events, consultation, and outreach to increase public awareness of VR/AR technology, and create workforce and educational training. City Agencies and Berklee College of Music Announce Preservation of Historic Recording Studio

Mayor de Blasio and Berklee College recently announced that Berklee is coming to New York City and will make a home in the world-renowned Power Station studios, which were previously in danger of shutting down. Now, with the support of MOME and the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), as well as the vision of Berklee Trustee Pete Muller, Berklee will renovate the facility and transform it into BerkleeNYC, a state-of-the-art recording and video production facility for the city's music, theater, television, and film industries.

MOME Commissioner and Steiner Studios Chairman Meet with Students at Brooklyn College's Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema

As part of City Hall in Your Borough week, Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin and Steiner Studios Chairman Doug Steiner had a sit-down conversation with over twenty current MFA students at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, the only school on a working film lot and New York City's only public film school. The conversation centered around the importance of Feirstein's mission of diversifying the entertainment industry, as well as career paths after graduation and MOME's efforts to open doors for filmmakers from all walks of life.



Congratulations to Cycle 49 of the “Made in NY” PA Training Program!

On October 13, 24 New Yorkers completed the "Made in NY" PA Training Program, taking the next step towards careers in NYC's booming film and television industry. To date, this program has prepared 735 previously unemployed and low-income New Yorkers for entry-level jobs as production assistants.
