MESSAGE FROM ENDGBV

Leadership Transition

Headshot picture of our new Acting Commissioner Saloni Sethi. They are smiling with arms folded.

While Commissioner Cecile Noel is on extended leave, First Deputy Commissioner Saloni Sethi will be the acting Commissioner. Saloni has served with the City for over seven (7) years and has over twenty (20) years of total experience in the private, nonprofit, and public space. Their expertise has been rooted in interrupting cycles of violence and providing pathways to heal from the traumas of that violence. A wise leader and survivor themselves, Saloni will continue to make sure the city's response to domestic and gender-based violence centers survivors while strengthening and expanding supports across the city.

WHAT’S NEW

This year marks the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a reconvening of all countries in the United Nations that has ratified the Treaty on the Status of Women in mutual acknowledgement and commitment to the complete equality of women. During the CSW, ENDGBV participates in a number of exciting ways including participating in expert panels, hosting tours of our Family Justice Centers for foreign delegations, and meeting with consul generals. We engage with the international community on this issue to demonstrate the importance of holistic care for all survivors, and we also discuss new ideas on the best ways to address domestic and gender-based violence.

Our acting Commissioner Saloni Sethi was invited to be a panelist for "From UN Resolution to Action: Advancing Access to Justice for Survivors of Violence Against Women Worldwide" to discuss with other experts in the field, the importance of not only accessible systems of support for survivors, but defining the aims of justice and how it differs by individual, as well as addressing all facets of domestic violence. After this event, ENDGBV conducted a tour of the Manhattan Family Justice Center for Ministers of the Swedish and French Consulates where we could demonstrate the services we offer and discuss ideal support models for survivors internationally.

The Bronx Family Justice Center (BxFJC) celebrates turning 14 on April 19th! Since its opening in 2010, the BxFJC has been an integral support for survivors by assisting them in accessing various kinds of care providers from a single location.

In addition to providing core FJC services, throughout the years, BxFJC has been honored to host many events – from Mother's Day celebrations, community baby showers, reading groups through the Brooke Jackman Program, weekly veggie box distributions and turkeys at Thanksgiving to their economic empowerment workshops through career fairs, the W!SE program and Bottomless Closets – the BxFJC celebrates and supports Bx families. They always look forward to celebrating their amazing partner staff through staff appreciation days, self-care events, game days, ice cream socials, potluck lunches and homemade breakfast day (complete with pancakes!). The Bronx FJC Team would like to give a special shout out to their Operations Manager, Sandra Mejia, who has been with BxFJC since day 1!  As ENDGBV continues to grow our understanding of the varying and intersecting needs of survivors, we remain committed to expanding our partnerships, listening to the Bronx community and supporting survivors.

EVENTS AND AWARENESS

Sexual Violence Awareness Month

April is SVAM (sometimes known as Sexual Assault Awareness Month or SAAM), and the 2024 theme, set by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center is "Building Connected Communities". Creating a world that is safe for survivors and those vulnerable to sexual violence requires building strong and connected communities committed to addressing these issues . Safe public spaces where people can move about freely as their authentic selves without the fear of harassment and violence is key to that connectedness. In the last year, ENDGBV and the Street Harassment Prevention Advisory Board have put forward a resource guide for members of the public to reference and help address this issue in their own lives and communities. Click here to download the resource guide.

A national survey and report published in 2019 on street harassment conducted by the UC San Diego Center on Gender Equity and Health and Stop Street Harassment found that 71% of female respondents had experienced harassment in a public place, including a street, park, train, bus, or nightlife venue.

We are invested in spreading awareness about resources for those who experience sexual violence in any form, transforming a culture of bystanders, and creating more safe spaces for all New Yorkers. We encourage everyone to learn more about sexual violence and engage with this resource guide to gain more information and become e allies to survivors in their community.

Denim Day

The last Wednesday of Sexual Violence Awareness Month is Denim Day, and each year people from across the world gather in denim to protest the mistreatment of survivors in the justice system and raise awareness for sexual assault. April 4th Day of Action for Medicaid Expansion

In anticipation of National Public Health Week (April 1-7), we are excited to invite you to join help launch an awareness campaign that really goes to the heart of this year's NPHW theme: Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health.

City Agency Partners are organizing a Day of Action for Medicaid Expansion on Thursday April 4, 2024 to spread the joyful news that ALL New Yorkers age 65+ – regardless of immigration status - may now be eligible for full Medicaid coverage!

  • New Yorkers - regardless of immigration status or ability to pay - have options for health care access & coverage
  • Depending on income eligibility, folks 65+ who already have Emergency Medicaid may automatically be transitioned to full Medicaid on a rolling basis over the next few months - they should look out for a letter.
  • Depending on income eligibility, folks 65+ who have never had Medicaid may be able to apply for Emergency Medicaid to get access to expanded Medicaid coverage that includes routine doctor visits, recommended screenings, lab tests, and more. Medicaid Rx can help with pharmacy coverage.
  • NYC is providing support for New Yorkers to apply through the NYC Department of Health and GetCoveredNYC!

We invite you to sign up for in-person OR virtual ways of taking part in this April 4th Day of Action for Medicaid Expansion. In doing so, you'll become an important ambassador for connecting older New Yorkers to the health care access and coverage they need in order to thrive.
