America's economy is going from bad to worse. Not only are we facing rising unemployment, rising home foreclosures, and rising prices from everything from food to gas, the infrastructure that made America great - our roads, bridges, rail lines, airports, and dams - is rusting away.
While our economic competitors are investing record amounts in high-speed rail lines and new airport runways, we are squandering money on pork barrel projects.
It's time for bold action from the federal government, not politics as usual. We urge Congress to pass a stimulus package that puts Americans to work building the infrastructure we need to remain competitive in the global economy. This will create good-paying jobs for Americans today.
It will strengthen important American industries that will supply much of the steel, concrete, timber and other materials used to construct the infrastructure. And it will build a strong economic foundation for our children.
We cannot afford to wait for another Hurricane Katrina to expose the weakness of our nation's infrastructure. We need action. Now.
