"If our City's record job growth continues it will surpass the record 66,000 jobs created back in 1956," said Mayor Giuliani. "This is in stark comparison to the 320,000 private sector jobs that were lost under the prior administration. In addition to this record job growth, the City's unemployment rate has shown a steep decline from 8.6 percent in March to 8.1 percent in April, as the number of unemployed City residents continues to fall. This significant decline is almost a two percent decline from a high of 9.8 percent over a year ago.
"Our City has seen an increase in investment and reinvestment following our historic reductions in crime, continued private sector job growth, targeted tax cuts and conservative fiscal spending," the Mayor continued. "Since January 1, 1997 our Administration has added over 106,000 new private sector jobs. If we continue this trend we will see the largest increase in job growth in 40 years. These factors all point to a revitalized City and New Yorkers can once again look to their City as a place of opportunity," the Mayor concluded.
