Statement Of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg On Death Of Harold B. Jackson

May 23, 2012

“Today, we mourn the passing of Hal Jackson, a radio pioneer and a member of the Radio Hall of Fame whose voice broke through color lines and broke down racial barriers for countless Americans. Hal was not only the first African-American voice on network radio or the first African-American play-by-play sports announcer, but an iconic legend who – during the Civil Rights movement – gave voice to the many who simply did not have one. When Hal moved to New York, he continued to lead the way at 107.5 WBLS for so many African-American radio announcers who followed. On behalf of a grateful city, our sincerest condolences and prayers are with his family at this time.”
