Translation: The mayor of New York City is joining  us right now to address various problems that affect the Big Apple. Let's go live with Ana Patricia Candiani, who has him there with all the details. Tell us, Ana Patricia.

Ana Patricia Candiani: Gracias, Esperanza, y le damos la bienvenida al alcalde por estar aquí con nosotros, a pesar de que en este momento va rumbo a una reunión.

Candiani: Empecemos con inmigración, señor alcalde. Desde que el presidente Biden cambió la política migratoria en la frontera, el número de personas sin documentos y solicitantes de asilo que entraron al país bajó alrededor del 30%. ¿Se ha reflejado eso en los albergues en Nueva York? 

Let's begin with immigration, Mr. mayor. After President Biden changed his policies at the border, there has been a 30 percent decrease in illegal crossings and asylum seeker entrances. Has this decline been reflected in New York City shelters, Mr. Mayor?

Mayor Adams: En este momento, hemos visto durante varias semanas que cada día llegan a la ciudad menos de mil personas. En un momento dado recibíamos 4 mil personas por semana, pero en otro momento eran 5 mil por semana. Los números han caído bastante y creemos que las políticas han tenido algún tipo de impacto, pero todavía tenemos 65 mil personas que buscan asilo y están a cargo nuestro.

Translation: We have witnessed for several weeks now, less than a thousand people coming to the city each day. At one time, we would get up to 4,000 people a week, but at one time, it was 5,000 a week. The numbers have dropped a lot, and we believe that the policies have had some impact, but we still have 65,000 people seeking asylum, and they are at our disposal.

Candiani: ¿Cómo va a detener la violencia en los albergues como la que acabamos de reportar en Brooklyn en estos días?

How are you going to stop the violence around those shelters, like the one that we just reported in Brooklyn, Mr. Mayor?

Mayor Adams: Es muy importante hacerlo y es lo que yo he estado pidiendo que se haga. Necesitamos permitir a las personas que trabajen, y también queremos ver al pequeño número de migrantes y los que buscan asilo que participan en comportamiento violento, y es un juego muy peligroso y que puede asentarse en nuestra ciudad y que puede lastimar no solo a los migrantes y que buscan asilo, sino también a las personas que vienen aquí, y la policía ha respondido de manera adecuada.

Translation: It is so important to do so, and that has been what I have been calling for. We need to allow people to work, and we also want to see the small number of migrants and asylum seekers who engage in violent behavior, and it is a very dangerous game and that can take hold in our city and that can hurt not only the migrants and asylum seekers, but also the people who come here, and the police have responded appropriately.

Candiani: La comunidad está totalmente cansada, señor alcalde. Recientemente usted anunció que iniciará un programa piloto en el subway con detectores de armas. ¿A partir de cuándo y en cuántas estaciones?

The community is absolutely tired, Mr. Mayor. Recently, you announced the subway metal detector pilot. When are we going to see them and in how many stations?

Mayor Adams: Vamos a comenzar con una estación y después vamos a ver cómo se crece. Hemos hecho muchísimas pruebas,y ha sido impresionante ver cómo detecta y que no es invasivo, y uno puede caminar y va a mostrar si hay un arma que está escondida dentro de una persona, si la tiene escondida y el jueves o viernes vamos a utilizarlo y después vamos a expandirlo. 

Translation: We are going to start out with one station, and then we are going to see the growth. We have done many tests and it has been very impressive how they detect and it is non-invasive and you can walk, and it will show you if there is a weapon that is hidden inside a person, if it is hidden. And on Thursday or Friday we are going to use it and then we will expand it.

Candiani: Pareciera que usted estaba dudando en respaldar la nominación de Kamala Harris a la presidencia. ¿Cuál fue la razón?

It seems that you were hesitant to endorse Kamala Harris as your Democratic Party nominee. What was the reason?

Mayor Adams: La respaldé en 2020 cuando quería ser presidenta. Ella era mi candidata, y estoy extremadamente orgulloso de extenderle mi respaldo y hacerlo ahora. Creo que la seguridad pública y los derechos de la mujer y de elegir es algo para movilizar y estoy muy emocionado por la posibilidad de tener la primera mujer presidenta de los Estados Unidos. No solo una mujer, sino una mujer de color con ascendencia india, y no importa el país, no importa cuál sea tu origen, siempre está la posibilidad de llegar al punto más alto.

Translation: I endorsed her in 2020 when she was running for president. She was my candidate, and I am extremely proud to extend it and do it now. I think that public safety and women's rights and choosing is something to mobilize, and I am very excited about the possibility of having the first woman president of the United States. Not only a woman, but a woman of color with an Indian history, and it does not matter the country, it does not matter what your background is, there is always the possibility of reaching the highest point.
