Bueno, en medio de esta crisis migratoria, aquí en la ciudad de Nueva York, el alcalde Eric Adams sigue tocando puertas en el gobierno federal. El mandatario continúa solicitando la ayuda de la administración del presidente Biden y, por supuesto, del Congreso. Hace poco, el alcalde Adams habló con nosotros, con Noticiero 47 Telemundo, de lo que espera con esta crisis migratoria. En la charla, bueno, Adams también compartió un poco de su vida personal. Translation: Hello everyone! Greetings from Allan Villafaña. Welcome to Enfoque Telemundo 47! Well, in the midst of this immigration crisis, here in New York City, Mayor Eric Adams continues to knock on doors of the federal government. The mayor continues to ask for help from President Biden's administration and, of course, Congress. Recently, Mayor Adams spoke with us, with Noticiero 47 Telemundo, about what he expects with this immigration crisis. During our chat, well, Adams also shared a little about his personal life. Yolanda Vásquez has more. From Lower Manhattan, Yolanda. 

Yolanda Vásquez: La estancia de varias familias migrantes en la antigua base militar Floyd Bennett en Brooklyn fue muy fugaz. Y es que dicen que tienen sus razones de peso. 

Translation: Several immigrant families’ stay at the former Floyd Bennett Military Base in Brooklyn was very short-lived. And they say they have compelling reasons. 

Migrante 1: No nos podemos quedar aquí. Es muy lejos. Mi niño está estudiando. Se le hace muy difícil. 

Translation: We can't stay here. It’s far away. My son is in school. It's very difficult for him. 

Migrante 2: Porque los niños están estudiando y está muy lejos para el [lugar de] estudio. 

Translation: Because the children are in school, and this is too far away from the [school] place. 

Vásquez: Sin embargo, este frío que arropa a la ciudad de Nueva York hoy hizo que otras familias no le pusieran problema a esta opción. 

Translation: However, this cold weather in New York City today meant that other families had no problem with this option.

Alejandra Diaz, Migrante: Mientras nos están dando un lugar, hay que agradecerles. 

Translation: As long as they are giving us a place, we must thank them. 

Wilkerman Contreras, Migrante: Estamos bien porque por lo menos nos han dado un techo donde dormir. Tenemos donde vivir. 

Translation: We are fine because at least they have given us a roof. We have a place to live. 

Vásquez: Esta medida que adoptó la ciudad para mitigar la crisis ha generado descontento en organizaciones como Legal Aid Society, que aboga por un mejor lugar para las familias con hijos.

Translation: This measure, adopted by the city to mitigate the crisis, has generated discontent among organizations such as the Legal Aid Society, which advocates for a better place for families with children.

Edward Josephson, Legal Aid Society: No puedo imaginarme yo mismo, cuidar a los niños en ese sitio. A mí me parece más bien una cárcel para niños. Pero sí, hay familias que se sienten desesperadas y que piensan ocupar ese sitio. No voy a pelear con ellos, pero, a mi parecer, es mejor que una familia esté en un cuarto de hotel. 

Translation: I can't imagine taking care of children in that place. It looks more like a children's prison to me. But yes, there are families who feel desperate and plan to take that place. I'm not going to fight with them but, in my opinion, it's better for a family to be in a hotel room.

Mayor Eric Adams: This is not, you know, the best conditions, but we’re managing a crisis, and we can’t say it any better — that we need help.  

Vásquez: Frente a esta incomodidad, el propio alcalde Adams visitó la carpa con capacidad para 2.000 personas. Y hoy, su portavoz emitió un comunicado en el que dice, entre otras cosas, “Hemos utilizado todos los espacios posibles de la ciudad de Nueva York y simplemente nos hemos quedado sin buenas opciones para albergar a los migrantes. Es por eso, que seguimos pidiendo ayuda federal y estatal, y una estrategia para que otros estados y ciudades también puedan abrir sus puertas a estas familias”. Y mientras tanto, el número de migrantes llegando a la Gran Manzana sigue aumentando. Y es el caso de esta familia, que arribó con una maleta cargada de sueños. 

Translation: Given this discomfort, Mayor Adams himself visited the tent with capacity for 2,000 people. And today, their spokesperson issued a statement that said, among other things, “We have used every possible corner of New York City and are quite simply out of good options to shelter migrants. This is why we continue to call for help from our state and federal partners, and a strategy so that other states and cities can also open their doors to these families.” And meanwhile, the number of immigrants arriving in the Big Apple continues to increase. And this is the case of this family, who arrived with a suitcase full of dreams.

Andreina Martinez, Migrante: Yo sé que voy a salir de todo esto, me voy a estabilizar y voy a estar bien, tranquila. 

Translation: I know I'm going to get out of all this. I'm going to get stabilized, and I'm going to be fine, calm. 

Vásquez: Telemundo 47, mucho más temprano este mes, logró sentarse, uno a uno, con el alcalde de la ciudad de Nueva York, en donde habla ampliamente de este tema de inmigración, también de su viaje a Latinoamérica y sobre todo también del espíritu de festividades, que tiene que ver con Acción de Gracias y también con la Navidad. 

Recientemente usted ha dicho que, si la situación con los inmigrantes continúa, de la manera en la que se está presentado en este momento, a lo mejor, van a terminar migrantes durmiendo en las calles. ¿Qué tan pronto podría ocurrir esto y qué hacer para evitarlo? 

Translation: Telemundo 47, earlier this month, managed to sit down, one on one, with the mayor of New York City, where he speaks at length about this issue of immigration, also about his trip to Latin America and above all also about the spirit of the holidays, which has to do with Thanksgiving and also with Christmas.

You have recently said that, if the situation with immigrants continues, as it currently is, perhaps immigrants will end up sleeping on the streets. How soon could it happen and what can be done to prevent it? 

Mayor Adams: We know… It's not a question of if, but when. If this keeps up, a population of people — preferably single, adult males — are going to be probably sleeping on our streets. We're not saying no more.

Vásquez: ¿Qué específicamente espera usted del gobierno federal para sentir que hay un alivio y que le están ayudando? 

Translation: What do you expect specifically from the federal government to feel like there is relief and that they are helping you? 

Mayor Adams: So, what we're asking from the federal government is, one, a decompression strategy at the border. We have 108,000 different cities, states, villages. Let's spread this out throughout the entire country, not just New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston and Massachusetts. Second, they should fund this. I mean, this is a federal crisis. You can't tell the people- 

Vásquez: Cuando le preguntamos sobre la intención de muchos migrantes de mudarse a otro estado, pero que no tienen dinero para le viaje, la receptividad del alcalde fue inmediata para ayudarlos en este proceso. 

Translation: When we asked him about the intention of many migrants to move to another state, but who do not have money for the trip, the mayor was immediately receptive to helping them in this process. 

Mayor Adams: Yes, yes, and yes. It is probably one of the smartest things we can do. Deputy Mayor Williams‑Isom and her team put that together. We call it reticketing. 

Vásquez: Yo sé que usted es un hombre de aspiraciones. ¿Cómo se ve usted en diez años? 

Translation: I know that you are a man of aspirations. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 

Mayor Adams: I see myself in 10 years - that a young migrant asylum seeker or a green card holder or someone that's undocumented, they're going to come up to me and say that because of what you've done, I am now this. I'm now in law school. I'm now a doctor. I'm now opening my own business. They're going to realize because of the compassion that I have shown and giving people the dignity and telling them the honesty that we're going to go through this together. 

Vásquez: Y si se preguntan si sus aspiraciones tienen alguna conexión con la Casa Blanca, esa idea parece que no le es indiferente. 

Translation: And if you're wondering if his aspirations have any connection to the White House, he doesn't seem to be indifferent to that idea. 

Mayor Adams: You can run the country from New York City… 

Vásquez: ¿Por qué agradece usted hoy en día? ¿Por qué agradece este mes? 

Translation: What are you grateful for today? What are you grateful for this month? 

Mayor Adams: I'm thankful for my mom. You know, mommy was an amazing woman. 

Vásquez: Y aunque su mamá murió meses antes de posicionarse como alcalde, dice que no hubiese sido posible sin su continuo apoyo a lo largo de la vida. ¿Qué le gustaría que le regalaran en Navidad? ¿Cuál es el regalo que espera? Que no sea físico, que sea algo que lo hace feliz. 

Translation: And although his mother died months before he became mayor, he says it wouldn't have been possible without her continued support throughout his life.

Vásquez: What would you like someone to give you for Christmas? What is the gift you are waiting for? It doesn't have to be physical. It can be something that makes you happy. 

Mayor Adams: I want a smile from someone that — I gave them a gift that they needed for the moment. To me, if you deposit into the social bank of life you can draw on equity when you need it. And I want to deposit something into the life of someone who believed they were forgotten, and they can just give me that authentic smile.
