Transcript: Mayor Adams Appears on Noticiero 47 Telemundo

Alejandro Mendoza: En otros temas la gobernadora Kathy Hochul y el alcalde Eric Adams celebran la aprobación esta tarde en el Concejo Municipal del plan denominado la Ciudad de Sí, que busca construir más de 80,000 nuevas unidades de vivienda en Nueva York de aquí al año 2040. 

Translation: In other news, Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams celebrate the approval this afternoon in the municipal council of the plan called the City of Yes, which seeks to build more than 80,000 new housing units in New York between now and 2040. 

Darling Burdiez: El alcalde Eric Adams ha prometido 5,000 millones de dólares para hacer realidad este proyecto, que tiene, por supuesto, críticos y defensores. La votación fue de 31 a favor y 20 en contra.

Translation: Mayor Eric Adams has pledged $5 billion to make this project a reality, which, of course, has its critics and defenders. The vote was 31 in favor and 20 against.  

Today, Adams spoke face to face with our Yolanda Vásquez about this and other topics. So we immediately went over to you live, Yolanda, so you could tell us about this interview. 

Yolanda Vásquez: Darling y Alejandro, ¿qué tal? Muy buenas tardes. Y es que desde muy temprano el alcalde de la ciudad de Nueva York estaba muy optimista frente a este plan que para él es bastante importante en todo su periodo. Dice realmente tiene un compromiso con la ciudad, pero también nos habló de esos temas que tanto le preocupan a nuestra comunidad y es el que tiene que ver con los migrantes. ¿Qué va a pasar? Y sobre todo con su relación con el presidente Trump, pero hay un tema que en particular le arrancó lágrimas.  

Con una sonrisa a flor de piel, el alcalde Adams recibe el día en que su plan de City of Yes da otro paso para su aprobación para permitir la creación de más de 80,000 viviendas en un periodo de 15 años. Hoy le dijo a Telemundo 47 por qué este plan está dentro de sus prioridades.  

Translation: Darling and Alejandro how are you? Very good afternoon. And from very early on the mayor of New York City was very optimistic about this plan, which for him is quite important throughout his period.  

He says he really has a commitment to the city, but he also talked to us about those issues that concern our community so much and that is the one that has to do with migrants. What is going to happen? And especially with her relationship with President Trump, but there is one topic in particular that brought tears to his eyes.  

With a smile on his face, Mayor Adams welcomes the day his City of Yes plan takes another step toward approval to allow the creation of more than 80,000 homes over a 15-year period. Today he told Telemundo 47 why this plan is among his priorities. 

Mayor Eric Adams: There’s a lot of projects that are in the pipeline, waiting to be built. 

Vásquez: Hay muchos proyectos que están en proceso de construcción. Esperamos la oportunidad de hacerlo, comenzar el proceso de rezonificación de algunas de estas comunidades. Esta ley de rezonificación que será financiada con una asignación de 5,000 millones de dólares de la ciudad y el estado, busca ayudar a las familias de bajos recursos a tener su propia vivienda.  

¿Señor alcalde, con el nuevo presidente electo de los Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, siente usted que va a tener un aliado ahora en la Casa Blanca cuando él asuma el 20 de enero para solucionar la crisis migratoria que tiene la ciudad de Nueva York? 

Translation: There are many projects that are in the process of construction. We look forward to the opportunity to do so, to begin the rezoning process for some of these communities. This rezoning law, which will be financed with a $5 billion allocation from the city and state, seeks to help low-income families have their own home.  

Mr. Mayor, with the new president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, do you feel that you will have an ally now in the White House when he takes office on January 20 to solve the immigration crisis that New York City is experiencing? 

Mayor Adams: We need to, now, figure out how do we work with this administration. 

Vásquez: Necesitamos buscar la manera de trabajar con esta administración para obtener lo mejor para la ciudad de Nueva York. ¿Qué pasa si el zar de la frontera dice que su plan realmente es venir a los refugios y sacar a todos esos inmigrantes y deportarlos?   

Translation: We need to find a way to work with this administration to get what is best for New York City. What if the border czar says his plan is really to come to the shelters and remove all those immigrants and deport them? 

Mayor Adams: And here is what I must do, as a person who believes that people should always have an opportunity. 

Vásquez: Esto es lo que yo haría, le doy la oportunidad de escucharlo y también le doy mis ideas para el bienestar de todos. Adams dijo que ya tiene fecha para escuchar al zar de la frontera entrante sobre el plan del nuevo gobierno, que muchos le temen, pero el alcalde está optimista.  

Translation: This is what I would do, I give you the opportunity to listen to it and I also give you my ideas for the well being of everyone. Adams said he already has a date to hear from the incoming border czar about the new administration's plan, which many fear, but the mayor is optimistic. 

Mayor Adams: Next week, I’m going to sit down with the border–

Mayor Adams: You can’t fight something that you don’t even know what you’re fighting against. 

Vásquez: No puedes luchar contra algo, contra lo que ni siquiera sabes contra qué estás luchando.  

Translation: You can't fight something you don't even know what you're fighting against. 

Mayor Adams: We need to change our sanctuary city laws when it comes down to dangerous people. 

Vásquez: Necesitamos cambiar nuestra ley de Ciudad Santuario cuando llegue el momento.  

Adams, quien dijo ha coincidido en varios lugares con el presidente electo Trump después de las elecciones, lo considera una persona solidaria en el tema de las investigaciones que enfrenta.  

Translation: We need to change our Sanctuary City law when the time comes. 

Adams, who said he met President-elect Trump in several places after the election, considers him a supportive person on the subject of the investigations he faces. 

Mayor Adams: And God works in mysterious ways.

Translation: I would like to remember how important good friends are. Good friends enter the room when others leave. Sometimes God and our ancestors want us to go through something to see who our true friends are.  

People along this journey have broken my heart, they have hurt me a lot. But at the end of the day he knows that this is part of life and ends his conversation in the spirit of the holidays.
