Transcript: Mayor Adams Appears Live on Univision's "Noticias Univision 41"

Host: Seis y nueve minutos, y a pesar del frío que está haciendo allá afuera, estamos con la comunidad en el Bronx. Por tercer año consecutivo, “Univision Nueva York Contigo” se une a la oficina de la presidenta del condado del Bronx para traer sonrisas a cientos de niños. Pasamos de inmediato con nuestra compañera Adriana Vargas, sigue en el tradicional encendido de árbol de Navidad y la entrega de juguetes que está a punto de comenzar, para la que también nos acompaña el alcalde Eric Adams. For the third consecutive year, “Univision Nueva York Contigo” joins forces with the Bronx Borough President's Office to bring smiles to hundreds of children. We’re joined next by our colleague Adriana Vargas at the traditional Christmas tree lighting and toy delivery that is about to begin, where Mayor Eric Adams will also accompany us. Adri, good afternoon. Tell us what the atmosphere is like there.  

Adriana Vargas: Muy buenas noches, saludos, queridos televidentes, aquí compartiendo con esta comunidad hermosa del Bronx desde el Grand Concourse. ¿Estamos listos para el encendido del árbol de Navidad? ¿Sí o no? Y tenemos a un invitado de lujo. Es el tercer año consecutivo en que Univision Contigo llega hasta este punto, a este acto tan importante, tan significativo para nuestra comunidad.   

El alcalde de la ciudad, el señor Eric Adams, acaba de llegar aquí y nos va a acompañar en unos segundos y vamos a conversar con él, entre otras cosas, pues de la seguridad y lo que pueden esperar los neoyorquinos para este cierre de temporada. Obviamente son muchas las celebraciones, no solamente la Navidad, en esta conclusión del año 2023. Señor alcalde, bienvenido.  

Translation: Good evening, greetings, dear viewers. I'm here with the beautiful Bronx community in Grand Concourse. Are we ready for the lighting of the Christmas tree, yes or no? And we have a special guest. It is the third consecutive year in which “Univision Contigo” comes here to this important event, so significant for our community.  

The mayor of the city, Mr. Eric Adams, has just arrived here, and he is going to join us in a few seconds, and we are going to talk to him, among other things, about security and what New Yorkers can expect for the end of the season. Obviously there are many celebrations, not just Christmas, at the end of the year 2023. Mr. Mayor, welcome.

Vargas: So, Mr. Mayor, we're live now for Univision. The first question is mainly what can New Yorkers expect in terms of security for these holidays here that are coming?  

Mayor Adams: Oh, listen, we're going to partner with our Bronx borough president and all the borough presidents and the entire team. NYPD is out in full force. They're going to make sure that people enjoy the holidays in a very safe way. And it's just amazing what they do every day. You think about it, crime is down, homicides are down, shootings are down, jobs are up. We're really trending in the right direction.  

Vargas: Let me just say that now, sir, thank you very much.   

Bueno, nos dice el alcalde que obviamente que piensa que va a ser una fiesta que va a transcurrir en medio de tranquilidad, que los empleos están altos, que el crimen, según él y según sus cifras, han descendido, que hay muchos factores que han descendido positivamente, y en esa medida, pues solamente, dice él, esta también el trabajo de NYPD, en asocio con los diferentes presidentes de los condados, entre otros, por supuesto, en el que estamos, en el condado del Bronx.  

Mr. Mayor, the Open Streets Program, was very successful for summertime, also in Halloween. Are you thinking of expanding it for these holidays?  

Le vamos a preguntar al alcalde sobre el programa de Calles Abiertas que funcionó bien en el verano, ustedes saben, también en Halloween, ahora en Navidades.  

Mayor Adams: Traditionally, Open Streets was only for center of Manhattan, but with the advocacy from the borough presidents throughout the entire borough now throughout the entire city, 200 Open Streets, 20 miles, people are out enjoying themselves, and it's an economic boost.  

Vargas: Dice que sí, que este es un programa que tradicionalmente funcionó en el centro de Manhattan y ahora se ha expandido, no solamente a este condado, sino en general a todos, con cerca de 200 calles, cerca de 20 millas, ha dicho, en las que la gente podrá disfrutar de esos caminos peatonales.
