Albert D'Angelo's Biography

Albert "Al" D’Angelo was born on 149th Street and Wales Avenue in the Bronx. He attended Saint Anselm’s Grammar School, Rice High School, and Iona College where he received his Bachelor of Science in History and Master of Education. At Manhattan College, he received a Master of Administration and Supervision.

Al began his teaching career at the age of 19 as a substitute teacher. He was hired full-time at Saints Philip and James School on 212th Street and Boston Road. While there, he also coached basketball and softball and met his wife Christina. Al and Christina married in 1970 and have one daughter, who is a detective for the Bronx District Attorney's Office. The family moved to Morris Park in 1979.

Al continued his career in education as Principal of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parochial School in Washington Heights in Manhattan. While there, he and a friend began a not-for-profit organization to develop a summer sports program for teenagers ages 14 to 19. His career took him to New Rochelle where he served as Principal of Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School from 1991 until his retirement in 2013. Under his leadership, full-day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs were established.

Al is a man who takes pleasure in helping others. He has served on the Board of Trustees of Aquinas High School. He was a member of the Archdiocesan negotiation team for teacher and principal contracts. Al also served as Chairman of Catholic School Principals in Manhattan and Westchester. He was Chairman of School Evaluation Teams for the Archdiocese and a member of an Archdiocesan team, which worked with schools at risk. 

Al was elected to Bronx Community School Board District 11 in 1994 and served there for eight years until the Boards were disbanded by the Bloomberg Administration. He served as First Vice President for six of the eight years. He became President of the Saint Clare’s Father’s Club, for which he coached basketball and softball. He became a member of the Morris Park Community Association in the 1980s and served as its President for 12 years. Al is also a member of the advisory boards at Jacobi Medical Center and the Einstein College of Medicine and the Board of Directors at Cardinal Spellman High School. Al was elected First Vice Chairman of Community Board 11 in February 2013, having served the Board since his appointment by Bronx Borough President Carrión in 2004. Al has received community service awards from the Forum of Italian-American Educators, the Select Woman’s Association Network, and the 49th Precinct Community Council as well as citations from Borough Presidents Ferrer and Carrión and State Senators Klein and Velella.

Al resides in Morris Park with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson.
