NYC Census 2020 and Univision New York Launch "Dos Minutos" 2020 Census Campaign

Now New York City residents will learn in just two minutes about how to take the census and why it's so important to Latinx communities

New York City officials encourage all New Yorkers to take the census from their home today by visiting my2020census.gov or by calling 844-330-2020 (English) or 844-468-2020 (Spanish)

NEW YORK MARCH 19, 2020 - Today, NYC Census 2020 in collaboration with Univision New York announced a new marketing campaign tailored to mobilize Spanish-speaking communities in New York City to take the census. The "Dos Minutos" campaign will educate viewers through Spanish language conversations between Univision's on-air personality Damaris Diaz and Catherine Almonte, senior manager, governmental affairs, NYC Census 2020. Given the spread of COVID-19, the NYC Census 2020 campaign is focused on encouraging New Yorkers to self-respond to the census now. If New Yorkers take a few minutes to self-respond now from the safety and security of their own home, they will avoid a knock on their door during the door-to-door enumeration period over the summer.

The census also leads to direct investments in New York City's health care system. For example, census data determines allocations for funding for CHIP and hospitals. What's more, its' how public health officials get the foundational data that public health experts use to plan for and manage situations like COVID-19.

"Dos Minutos" will air daily on Univision New York's morning newscast Al Despertar from 5am to 7am ET and on Edicion Digital NY at 12:30pm ET. The campaign will also be supported with 15 second vignettes that will air throughout the day on UniMás 68 as well as through on-air promos on Univision New York's three radio stations WADO 1280 AM, LA X 96.3 FM and Que Buena 92.7 and UnivisionNewYork.com.

"While the Census Bureau's recent announcement to delay their field outreach by two weeks is a positive step, aggressive measures will be needed to ensure that the census can proceed with integrity and without exacerbating the public health risk from COVID-19 pandemic," said Julie Menin, Director of NYC Census 2020. "In the meantime, New Yorkers should complete the Census as soon as possible at my2020census.gov. At this critical time we are in, it is now more important than ever to fill out the census as funding for various healthcare programs, including children's health insurance, are linked to the census."

"As the Spanish-language news leader serving New York City for over fifty years, we are proud to partner with NYC Census 2020 to inform and empower the Latino community in our area to participate in the Census," added Roberto Yañez, President and General Manager of Univision New York. "In light of these uncertain times, it's more important than ever to encourage our community to be counted. By partnering with NYC Census 2020 we can help ensure that our audience will get the accurate and actionable information they need to participate in this year's Census."

The more New Yorkers who fill out the census, the more money the city receives for public education, healthcare, housing, roads and bridges, and so much more. This year, the census is online or via phone for the first time, and NYC Census 2020 encourages all New Yorkers to take the census right away by visiting my2020census.gov or by calling 844-330-2020 (English) or 844-468-2020 (Spanish). From March 12 until mid-May, the census will be primarily conducted online and via phone, and all New Yorkers are very strongly encouraged to participate online or by phone right away in order to avoid a knock on their doors in the summer. The census is for everyone, no matter one's immigration or citizenship status, or housing situation, and all New Yorkers -- no matter what language they speak or where or how they live -- must be counted.

About NYC Census 2020

NYC Census 2020 is a first-of-its-kind organizing initiative established by Mayor de Blasio in January 2019 to ensure a complete and accurate count of all New Yorkers in the 2020 Census. The $40 million program is built on four pillars: (1) a $19 million community-based awards program, The New York City Complete Count Fund, empowering 157 community-based organizations to engage historically undercounted communities around the 2020 Census; (2) an in-house "Get Out the Count" field campaign supported by the smart use of cutting-edge data and organizing technology, and a volunteer organizing program to promote a complete count in each of the city's 245 neighborhoods; (3) an innovative, multilingual, tailored messaging and marketing campaign, including a $3 million commitment to investing in community and ethnic media to reach every New York City community; as well as (4) an in-depth Agency and Partnerships engagement plan that seeks to leverage the power of the City's 350,000-strong workforce and the city's major institutions, including libraries, hospitals, faith-based communities, cultural institutions, higher educational institutions, and more, to communicate with New Yorkers about the critical importance of census participation. Through close partnerships with trusted leaders and organizations across the five boroughs, this unprecedented campaign represents the largest municipal investment in census organizing nationwide and will build an enduring structure that empowers New Yorkers to remain civically engaged.
