Long Island City, NY – Acting Commissioner Ana Barrio of the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced today that two Emergency Medical Service (EMS) stations built by DDC have been selected for design awards in a competition sponsored by the Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
The AIA Brooklyn + Queens Design Awards (BDQA) were “established to encourage excellence in architectural design, raising public awareness of the built environment and to honor the architects, owners & builders of significant projects.” Though the awards have retained their original name, the AIA Brooklyn and AIA Queens chapters now collaborate with the AIA Bronx chapter to honor projects in all three boroughs.
For 2018, the Zerega Avenue EMS station in the Bronx received the BDQA Award of Excellence in the category of Sustainable Design, while the Greenpoint EMS Station in Brooklyn received the BDQA Award of Excellence in the Institutional category.
“DDC provides highly functional public buildings for the City’s first responders which support the staff in their efforts to save lives while incorporating environmental efficiencies that promote long-term sustainability goals,” said Acting Commissioner Barrio. “We value our relationship with FDNY greatly, and are very proud to deliver to them advanced EMS stations, plus modern firehouses such as Rescue 2 in Brooklyn.”
The Zerega Avenue EMS station was completed by DDC in 2013. The 11,461 square-foot station, designed by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects, features a sloping green roof that doubles as a water catchment system for community gardeners. Other sustainable features include natural ventilation, a solar hot water heating system, efficient building systems and equipment and landscaped rain gardens. The facility houses ambulances, command vehicles, lockers, equipment and administrative spaces for more than 100 EMS workers. The design for the station won a New York City Public Design Commission Award in 2009.
The Greenpoint EMS Station is a two-story, 10,400-square-foot facility that can house four ambulances and an EMS command vehicle. Michielli + Wyetzner Architects designed the facility, whose exterior features a glass curtain wall with a honeycomb-patterned inner layer that allows light into the building while providing privacy for on duty staff.
