DEPARTMENT HOLDS SWEARING-IN CEREMONY FOR 115 CORRECTION OFFICER RECRUITS

This is the Third, and Largest, Class of Recruits to Join DOC This Year

Department Continues Partnership with NYPD and Successful Field Training Program

College Point, N.Y. – New York City Department of Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie will welcome a new class of 115 Correction Officer recruits during a swearing-in ceremony at 10 A.M. on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at the NYPD Academy, located at 130-30 28th Avenue in Queens.

“I am incredibly proud to welcome in the newest members of the Boldest Family. Over the next 13 weeks, these new recruits will take part in a rigorous training program that will support them in deescalating tense moments, adhering to correctional best practices, and serving the needs of the people in our care,” said Commissioner Maginley-Liddie. “Staff is our most important resource and they will continue to receive guidance under the direction of our expert instructors both now and throughout their career. I am truly grateful to these brave and bold men and women for answering our call to service and for their unwavering dedication to the safety of our city.”

Over the next 13 weeks, these new correction officer recruits will train at the NYPD’s state-of-the-art training facility in College Point, Queens, thanks to the department’s ongoing partnership with the NYPD. The recruits will receive rigorous training from nationally-recognized corrections professionals in topics including de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, suicide prevention, defensive tactics, law, jail procedure, firearms, CPR, Narcan administration, and fire safety.

Upon completion of their 13 weeks of academy training, the recruits will be sworn-in as Correction Officers at a graduation ceremony. Then, they will immediately relocate to facilities on Rikers Island for an 8-week field training program under the guidance and mentorship of veteran officers. This immersive training model is how the department is instilling proper correctional practices, improving training, and making its jails safer for our members of service, civilian staff, and people in custody.
