DOC AT 130 YEARS: DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH WITH 3rd ANNUAL WOMEN’S CONFERENCE

Staff Members to be Honored for Their Years of Service With the Agency

College Point, NY — The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) will celebrate the women of DOC with its 3rd annual Women’s Conference held at the New York City Police Academy at 130-30 28th Avenue in Queens at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

“While women have historically shaped the Department of Correction, their instrumental contributions have not always been recognized,” said NYC DOC Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie. “This conference celebrates the women of DOC, who promote public safety and have a transformational impact on the individuals in our care.”

Nearly 50 percent of uniformed correction staff are women. Women represent 60 percent of captains, 58 percent of assistant deputy wardens, 75 percent of deputy wardens and 57 percent of wardens. Moreover, women took on leadership roles at the department at a time when it was extremely rare for women to run city, state or federal agencies. For example, the first woman to lead the DOC was appointed in 1914 and she was the first woman to lead a major New York City agency.

The event will feature a keynote speech by retired detective first grade, and NYPD Chaplain, Reverend Dr. Barabara Williams-Harris; break-out sessions that address trauma and resilience, financial wellness, communication techniques, and navigating life’s challenges.  There will also be a fireside chat with Commissioner Maginley-Liddie and Reverend Williams-Harris, and a panel discussion with high-ranking women in the department. In addition, the department will honor staff members for their years of dedicated service.

The event is being held as the agency marks 130 years since its creation.
