To help kickoff our celebration of 130 years of public service in the largest municipality in the country, the spotlight is on Officer Jenkins who recently started his 46th year of perfect attendance.
Yes, you read that correctly. Officer Jenkins joined DOC in 1979 and to date, has not called out sick from work.
At our Medal Day Ceremony this past November, this Boldest hero was honored for his many years of dedicated service in the Department. That recognition, he noted, represented a full circle moment in his life because he was also honored as a teenager for perfect attendance.
“At my high school graduation in 1969, I was honored for finishing my elementary, middle school and high school education in the New York City Public Schools without being absent,” he recalled. “I think at a very young age I valued the importance of being present, punctual and focused. I always went to school and church, and that kind of discipline has continued throughout my life.”
Officer Jenkins is also a cyclist and has earned the nickname “Solid Gold” in The Boldest family for his success in winning gold medals in competitions.
“People always ask me why I have worked in this career so long, and my answer is I really love helping and talking to people,” he said. “We’re making a difference every day in this Department and always talking to the people in custody to motivate them to change their lives. I come to work every day with a smile on my face and ready to do what I can to help make this city a better place. I’m just thankful to be able to do something like this for so long.”
