Community Health Survey — Heart Follow-up Study

The Health Department is conducting the Community Health Survey, Heart Follow-up Study to learn more about the heart health of adult New Yorkers. About 2,800 participants in the city will be selected, using both landline and cell phones.

There are two parts to the study:

  1. A short health interview by phone.

  2. Collecting all of your urine over 24 hours. We will provide you with the information and materials you need to collect your urine. The day you finish collecting all of your urine, a medical technician will come to your home at an arranged time to pick up your urine. The technician will also take your blood pressure, height, weight and waist measurements.

Your results will be combined with other participants to calculate overall levels of sodium and potassium. We will study how these nutrients and participants’ behaviors are related to their blood pressure, kidney functioning and other health outcomes.

Protecting Your Personal Information

All information that you provide will be handled in a secure and confidential manner. Your personal information will not be linked to any of your results.

None of your identifying information will be shared with the Health Department. The data will be collected by the research firm Abt Associates and the medical examination service EMSI. Abt Associates uses trained interviewers to conduct telephone interviews. EMSI uses trained medical technicians to collect your urine and take basic body measurements, such as height, weight and blood pressure.
