Stay Safe and Warm Outdoors
Cover exposed skin and wear layers of dry, loose-fitting clothing together with:
- Winter hat
- Scarf
- Gloves or mittens
- Water-resistant coat, and
- Winter boots with good traction for icy patches.
Take extra care outdoors to avoid slips and falls from icy conditions.
- Older adults and those with balance problems are at higher risk for slip and fall injuries.
- Use handrails when going down the stairs.
Keep your steps, sidewalks, and driveways as free of snow and ice as possible.
- Avoid overexertion and rest frequently when shoveling snow.
- Stretch before you start shoveling and after you are done.
- Drink plenty of water before and after shoveling.
- Use rock salt on the ground to melt ice.
- Contact your local community organization or elected official’s office if you are an older adult who needs help with snow shoveling. If you are a community organization or an elected official, please contact New York Cares at 212-228-5000 to find volunteers who can provide shoveling assistance to older adults. Please keep in mind that spots are limited and volunteers may not be available in a particular area.
Clear snow from your car’s tailpipe before running the engine. DO NOT run your car inside a garage or against a snowbank as carbon monoxide can build up inside your car or garage.
