Furniture, Mattresses, and Rugs

Many furniture items — like bed frames, bookcases, couches and sofas, desks, dressers, and tables and chairs — are too large to fit in a bin or bag. Find out more about setting out large items.

Furniture

Take furniture apart before setting out for collection if possible. Bundle small pieces together and tape or tie with twine.

  • Set out furniture that is mostly metal or plastic with recycling.
  • All other furniture (mostly wood or fiberboard) should be set out at the curb the night before your trash-only collection day (NOT your recycling day).

NOTE: Glass furniture and mirrors cannot be recycled. Set these out with trash. For safety, double bag broken glass and tape large glass items before setting out for collection.

Exercise Equipment

Exercise equipment – like elliptical machines, stationary bikes, treadmills, and other home gym items – must be light enough to be lifted by two people and small enough to fit into a garbage truck.

Take apart, if possible, before setting out for collection. Batteries must be removed and disposed of properly.

Though some exercise equipment is electronic, most is not considered e-waste and should be disposed of by following regular rules for trash and recycling and large items.

Mattresses and Box Springs

Bedding items like mattresses and box springs MUST be sealed in plastic bags (to prevent the spread of bed bugs). Set out with trash the night before your trash-only collection day.

  • If you do not dispose of a mattress or box spring correctly, you may be fined up to $300.

Rugs and Carpets

Roll up and securely tie rugs and carpeting with twine. Set out with trash.
