NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT HOSTS MOBILE OFFICE HOURS ON CONEY ISLAND BOARDWALK
Atlantic Hurricane Season Peaks from August through October
August 1, 2019 — The New York City Emergency Management Department’s mobile office marked the beginning of peak Atlantic hurricane season in Brooklyn on Thursday. Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1, but the greatest potential for a hurricane in New York City occurs from August through October. To help Brooklynites prepare, NYC Emergency Management staff members, along with representatives from City agencies and partner organizations, visited the Coney Island boardwalk.
“As we enter into peak hurricane season, it is important that every New Yorker has a plan, because it only takes one storm,”
NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell said. “NYC Emergency Management is dedicated to working with our City partners to provide the critical resources people need to prepare their communities ahead of a coastal storm.”
“As we approach the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, FEMA will be encouraging everyone to make insurance their first line of defense,”
Regional Administrator of FEMA Region II Thomas Von Essen said. “People need to have the right insurance with the right limits for the disasters they may face. Homeowners, renters and businesses recover more quickly when insured.”
“I applaud the NYC Emergency Management Department for bringing their mobile office to the Coney Island community to engage residents on emergency preparedness,”
New York State Assembly Member Mathylde Frontus said. “It was not that long ago that Superstorm Sandy devastated our community, and it’s vital that residents learn what steps they can take in the event of an emergency. I thank them for bringing this important information directly to the residents of Coney Island.”
Thursday’s mobile office hours offered City agencies and emergency response partners the opportunity to engage with residents to discuss emergency preparedness, coordination, and planning and provide information on resources and services available to the public. During the event, residents learned the steps to take to prepare for coastal storms. NYC Emergency Management is hosting mobile office hours throughout the five boroughs during the coastal storm season.
The New York City Emergency Management Department partnered with the FDNY, FEMA, the American Red Cross in Greater New York, and the Parks department for the event.
“FDNY is proud to partner with New York City Emergency Management to provide critical emergency preparedness information to New Yorkers,”
Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said. “Our fire safety educators will be on the Coney Island Boardwalk teaching New Yorkers to keep their homes and their families safe from fire, and reminding everyone to have working smoke alarms in their homes.”
“Now is the time to prepare for a hurricane or for any disaster that could impact our city. The American Red Cross is proud to partner with our NYC partners to help ready our communities for the unexpected,”
Regional Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross in Greater New York Josh Lockwood said. “Thank you to NYC Emergency Management for bringing us all together.”
NYC Emergency Management’s mobile office hours are an annual outreach initiative that engages the public by bringing emergency preparedness to their communities. New Yorkers are encouraged to stop by to learn how to prepare for any emergency, including steps to make a plan, gather supplies, and stay informed. Residents also learned how to join their local
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a program consisting of more than 1,200 active volunteers dedicated to helping their communities during emergencies. This is the third event since NYC Emergency Management kicked off the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season at Midland Beach on Staten Island on May 31, and engaged with faith-based organizations and residents at Diversity Plaza in Queens on June 26.
