December 6, 2024 — When winter weather gets frightful, many New Yorkers plug in their space heaters, electric blankets, candles, and more to make their homes more delightful. Unfortunately, many of these appliances seriously elevate fire risk. On the latest episodes of New York City Emergency Management's podcasts, Prep Talk and ¡Prepárate!, hosts sit down with members of the New York City Fire Department to discuss how to stay warm and safe this winter.
On Prep Talk, listeners will learn how many smoke and carbon monoxide alarms you should have in your home, what to do in the event of a fire, and how to safely use space heaters from FDNY Captain Michael Kozo, the Officer in Charge of the Fire Safety Education Unit. Captain Kozo also discusses brush fires, which due to the record-dry fall have presented the FDNY with difficult and dangerous challenges. On ¡Prepárate!, NYCEM's Spanish-language podcast, hosts sat down with FDNY Deputy Chief of Staff Fabricio Caro, who also shared top fire safety tips and what to do in event of a fire at home in Spanish.
