Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh will preside over a graduation ceremony for Emergency Medical Technicians on Tuesday, September 26, at 10 a.m. at Christian Cultural Center, 12020 Flatlands Ave, Brooklyn. The ceremony can be viewed live on the Department’s website, www.nyc.gov/FDNY.
148 Probationary EMTs will graduate after training for 18 weeks at the EMS Academy. The class includes six veterans from the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Four of the probationary EMTs are legacies, the children of FDNY members who lost their lives in the line of duty, or of World Trade Center related illnesses.
“The FDNY responds to more than 1.6 million emergencies each year,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. “Our EMS members play a crucial role in ensuring our city’s safety, and our new EMTs are ready to bring their life-saving medical training to New Yorkers in need. They have shown they are committed to serving this city and making a difference.”
During their 18 weeks at the Academy, they trained in skills including CPR; patient medical and trauma assessments; oxygen and ventilation skills; management of hypotension and fractures; and spinal immobilization and emergency childbirth; and emergency vehicle operation.
The new EMTs will be assigned to units throughout New York City.
