FDNY Holds Line of Duty Death Plaque Dedication Ceremony and Street Renaming for EMS Captain Alison Russo

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh will preside over a plaque dedication ceremony to honor EMS Captain Alison Russo on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Station 49 at 1940 42nd St, Queens, NY 11105. Immediately following the plaque dedication ceremony, 42nd Street, between 20th Avenue and 19th Avenue will be renamed “Alison Russo Way.” The ceremony and street renaming can be viewed live on the Department’s website at www.nyc.gov/FDNY or HERE.

Captain Russo, 61, was a 25-year veteran of the FDNY. Russo was on duty at Station 49 in Queens on September 29, 2022, when she was attacked and stabbed without provocation near her station’s quarters. She was posthumously promoted to Captain.

Captain Russo was appointed to the FDNY as an EMT in 1998. She was promoted to Paramedic in 2002, and to Lieutenant in 2016. She worked at multiple EMS stations across the city, including Station 20, Station 17, Station 16, Station 45, the Queens Tactical Response and Station 49. Captain Russo also served as a Rescue Paramedic and possessed elite training for performing pre-hospital emergency medical care in dangerous and unusual environments.

Captain Russo was a World Trade Center first responder, aiding in the Department’s rescue and recovery efforts. She is the 1,158th member of the Department to make the Supreme Sacrifice.
