On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and FDNY Members gathered at Success Academy in the Upper West Side to reunite with Emely Hernandez, a pediatric patient from a fire on December 22, 2016 at West 59th Street.
The fire occurred in a 33 story building with hundreds of residents. This was a difficult and dangerous operation as there were more than two dozen patients overcome with smoke in the apartment – several who were in critical condition. FDNY deployed 39 units and 168 members to extinguish the fire.
Nurses and residents who lived in the building first rendered care to Emely and revived her. Firefighter Lieutenant Brendan Mohan from Engine Company (E-01) and Ladder Company 24 (L-24) received instructions from the command post to escort Emely to safety. There were challenges to this task as Emely was situated on the 26th floor. Elevators were shut off and there was substantial smoke in the halls and stairways. As trained to respond and leverage teamwork, Firefighter Michael Wasielesky from L-24 teamed up with Lt. Mohan to carefully bring Emely outside to be treated and transported to the nearest hospital along with Emergency Medical Station 35 Paramedics Joseph Losquadro and Silvana Uzcategui.
Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro commended the incredible work and rigorous training of the Firefighters and Paramedics during the chaotic scene of the fire.
“I’m incredibly proud of our Rescue Paramedics from Station 35 and Firefighters from Engine 1 and Ladder 24 who worked hand in hand to save you,” said Commissioner Nigro. Despite the terrible fire, there were many great stories of neighbors helping each other that day. Thankfully, no lives were lost in that fire, which is a testament to everyone who responded, from the FDNY members to the many Good Samaritans who stepped up like New Yorkers always do.”
He also reminded everyone that Fire Safety education is key to preventing and surviving fires, precautionary steps can be taken such as having a working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, practicing a fire escape plan, and knowing if your dwelling is fireproof by obtaining information from building management or superintendent.
