FDNY Celebrates African American History Month

February 7, 2017

On Tuesday February 7, 2017, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro welcomed FDNY members and friends to celebrate and honor African American History Month at FDNY Headquarters. This program was organized by FDNY’s African American Heritage Society for the 23rd consecutive year.

Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro underscored the importance of recognizing diverse groups that make up the Department.

“I believe when we celebrate together, no matter our heritage, we also foster a much deeper appreciation for the experiences of all those around us,” said Commissioner Nigro. “We see our similarities, not our differences. In doing so, we are a better city, and a much stronger Department.”

Educators from the Weeksville Heritage Center attended the event to further discuss the history, preservation, and education of African American culture and communities.

The African Heritage Society plans to honor the past and forge a stronger future with a planned trip to see the new Smithsonian African American History Museum in Washington D.C.

The Museum and this month honors and remembers many accomplishments, the fights for justice, and the great achievements African American men and women have fought for and produced in our nation’s history.
