In new PSA, the FDNY reminds New Yorkers to never block fire hydrants

February 11, 2025

The FDNY is urging New Yorkers to never block fire hydrants with parked cars in a newly released Public Service Announcement (PSA).

It's illegal to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrants. Seconds matter in an emergency, and blocking a hydrant could delay firefighters when responding.

On Jan. 9, 2025, FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said firefighters responding to a Brooklyn fire encountered delays after two vehicles blocked the two closest hydrants to the fire building.

Call 311 to report a blocked or improperly opened fire hydrant. For more information, go to FDNYSmart.org.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
