FDNY releases new PSA to remind New Yorkers about electrical safety

April 23, 2025

The FDNY is reminding New Yorkers about the importance of electrical safety in a newly released Public Service Announcement (PSA).

Over the weekend of April 19, the FDNY responded to six multiple-alarm fires. Investigations determined that ALL the fires were caused by various electrical issues.

"Overloading outlets, improperly using extension cords, and being careless with electricity is dangerous and risky," FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. "Electrical issues are the top cause of fires in the city, and we urge the public to pay attention to our messaging here. Prevention is the best line of defense, and electrical safety must be taken seriously."

The FDNY encourages all New Yorkers to follow electrical safety measures, including:

  • Do not overload outlets.
  • Avoid using extension cords for permanent wiring.
  • Look for warning signs.
  • Keep cords away from rugs and furniture.
  • Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
