Sunday, February 28, West Point cadets presented a commemorative flag marking the Department’s participation in the Vietnam War Commemorative Partner Program, to members at 8 firehouses and EMS Station 32 in Brooklyn. This week, every firehouse and EMS Station in New York City will receive the flag.
The nationwide program is managed by the Department of Defense as part of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, marking 50 years since the conflict, and is designed for communities, veterans' organizations and other agencies to assist in thanking and honoring our Vietnam War veterans and their families. Partners participate in commemoration by planning and conducting events and activities that recognize the war's veterans and their families' service, valor, and sacrifice. The commemorative flags representing FDNY involvement in the Vietnam War Commemoration will be flown beneath the American Flag at every Firehouse and EMS Station throughout 2017.
The Vietnam War Commemoration was announced by President Barack Obama and authorized by the Secretary of Defense as a result of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
