Wednesday, March 23, the FDNY Boxing team presented a $15,000 check to Building Homes for Heroes at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn. The donation will help build a new home for United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Claude.
“Over the last 30 years, our Boxing Team has donated well over $100,000 to various charities, especially those charities which help our servicemen and women,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “Building Homes for Heroes provides mortgage free, accessible homes for our veterans who need them the most – heroes like Gunnery Sgt. Claude.”
Gunnery Sergeant Claude was serving as the machine gunner just outside of Karbala when his team’s Humvee struck improvised explosive device (IED) and crashed into a drainage ditch. After being stabilized in Iraq, he was transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries and where his leg was ultimately amputated. Claude has received numerous medals and commendations for his service.
