On Tuesday, September 5th Probationary Paramedics graduated at Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, NY.
FDNY Paramedics train for 9 months at the EMS Academy, in all aspects of their job as Paramedics and Advanced Life Support providers, the highest level of pre-hospital care. These new Paramedics have been thoroughly trained in anatomy and physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology, as well as many critical lifesaving skills: intravenous therapy and medication administration; EKG monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation; and advanced airway management.
Deputy Commissioner Douglas H. White highlighted the rigorous training FDNY Paramedics go through to serve the residents and visitors of New York City.
“After many grueling months of training, each of you is equipped with the skills and abilities to provide the most advanced medical care we offer as a Department,” said Deputy Commissioner White. “FDNY Paramedics respond to the most serious medical calls we face. They arrive quickly, armed with the knowledge needed to save a life…not in an Emergency Room, but on a crowded street, at a fire, or in a patient’s home.”
Deputy Commissioner White also reminded the graduating Paramedics and graduation attendees the 16th anniversary of September 11th. He stated, “that day, we lost 343 of the greatest people to ever wear the FDNY uniform - They were much like you – dedicated and highly-trained, eager to help others and pledging to do all they could to save lives. In their final moments, they were doing just that – responding to the worst attack our Department has ever faced. They knew our Department’s mission is to always move forward and work to save others.”
Chief of Department James E. Leonard congratulated the Paramedics and reminded them of the millions of New Yorkers counting on them for help when 911 is dialed. Chief Leonard reminded them to rely on their training to save lives. “Throughout your training, your instructors have put you on a path to success and they have equipped you with the knowledge and expertise that will help you save lives - as of this moment, you all have the skills and the equipment, but it’s up to you to get the job done.”
Chief Leonard also recognized Paramedics that served two branches of the U.S. Armed Forces – Paramedic Stephen Aran, United States Marine Corps and Paramedic Margarita Murfitt of the United States Air Force.
Probationary Paramedic Aran emphasized his motivation help New Yorkers in need. “I became a Paramedic because I didn’t want to be helpless during someone’s time of need,” said Probationary Paramedic Aran. “I remember seeing a person in cardiac arrest in the street and no one knew how to help. I took an EMT course after that and found my calling. I’m looking forward to being able to help and to have the opportunity to do more.”
Probationary Paramedic Murfitt leveraged her experience with the U.S. Army to become a Probationary Paramedic. “The FDNY offers you so many opportunities for personal development, and opportunities to be there for those in need,” said Probationary Paramedic Murfitt. “The training I received in the U.S. Army and the FDNY is invaluable. It really prepared me to serve and I’m looking forward to applying what I learned.”
The Probationary Paramedics will be assigned to units throughout the city.
