FDNY Honors FDNY Veterans of World War I and II

May 9, 2017

On Tuesday, May 9th, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro hosted a ceremony honoring FDNY Veterans who served during World War I and World War II, and remembering the 43 FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice while serving their country during the wars.

"Your loved ones will never be forgotten by this Department,” said Commissioner Nigro. “Their noble and selfless acts, protecting life and property in our city, and serving our country during times of tremendous conflict, set an example for others and preserved the democracy and freedoms we all hold dear."

At the ceremony, a plaque was rededicated which honors the 43 FDNY members who died in the line of duty while serving in the branches of the United States military World War I and World War II.

Twelve FDNY veterans who served during World War II were presented with commemorative pins as a symbol of their service and valor. The pins list the branch of the military in which they served and are the same pins worn by active FDNY Veterans today.

Chief of Department James E. Leonard thanked the members for their service and highlighted the legacy of those who served in the wars. “You put your country before your own lives, and then you did it for your city as well," said Chief Leonard. "Your task was enormous – our country had been attacked on one front in Pearl Harbor – and in Europe, an evil group was threatening our allies and committing unspeakable acts."

Family members of three Firefighters who made the Supreme Sacrifice during World War II – Joseph O’Flaherty (United States Army Air Force), Thomas Shortell (United States Marine Corps), and John Leary (United States Army) were also presented with commemorative pins.

“For our family, this event is so meaningful because it keeps his name alive," says FDNY Lieutenant John W. Leary III, grandson of FDNY Firefighter and United States Armed Forces First Lieutenant John W. Leary, Ladder 122, who was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. First Lt. Leary served in HQ Company, 2nd battalion, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment assigned to the 17th Airborne. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.

This year 46 Veterans graduated as Probationary Firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedics, joining more than 1,300 Veterans who currently serve the Department.
