June 11, 2019

Members of the FDNY held a ribbon cutting ceremony for a renovated, state-of-the-art, EMS Station on June 11, EMS Station 39 in East New York, Brooklyn.

“This is a great day for the residents of Brooklyn, a great day for the members here, and truly a great day for the entire Department,” said First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. “The work our EMS members perform is nothing short of extraordinary. Today in a well-deserved, brand new home; that work continues, and will go on for generations to come,”

Chief of EMS Lillian Bonsignore added, “Having been a Captain here, I can tell you that the people in this community have a deep appreciation for the work that comes out of here. Even though this facility was in dire need of repair, it served as a place of hope for those people suffering from significant medical or traumatic emergencies. Many people come directly to the Station asking for help, and help is what they always get.”

EMS Station 39, serves the Cypress Hills, Brownsville, and East New York neighborhoods of Brooklyn. It will provide up to 10 Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support ambulances daily and supports a staff of more than 75 EMTS, Paramedics, and Officers.

The design and construction of the 8,328 square foot facility was completed in three years and was performed in-house by the FDNY Bureau of Facilities at a cost of $11.3 million. It has several environmentally conscious features, including, a green roof with leak detection, solar tube lighting in place of standard light fixtures which will provide a percentage of the station’s lighting, and radiant floor heating in the ambulance/fly car vehicle area.

“I wanted the EMTs, Paramedics, and Officers at this station to be proud of where they worked. I wanted the place to be clean, bright, and pleasant,” said FDNY Chief Architect Irma Fontaine.

“We all spend a lot of time at work, therefore I wanted to make sure that the building had a positive atmosphere. It makes me happy when I know the users of the building are happy. We included solar tubes in this project, which is great for the environment, as well as the city.”
