FDNY Graduation Ceremony for Paramedics

August 23, 2019

FDNY held a graduation ceremony for 9 Paramedics at the FDNY Training Academy on Randalls Island on Friday, August 23, 2019. “You put in the many long months of difficult training and studying to become Paramedics, while still serving this Department as the best in our city day in and day out,” said Chief of Staff Elizabeth Cascio as she addressed the class. “You have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to patient care and to the life-saving mission of this Department.”

The graduates are trained in all aspects of their job as Paramedics and Advanced Life Support providers, the highest level of pre-hospital care. The new Paramedics have been thoroughly trained in anatomy and physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology, as well as many critical lifesaving skills: intravenous therapy and medication administration; EKG monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation; and advanced airway management.

“The instructors at the academy are great. They got me through this process. It was fun to refresh and solidify my skills to prepare to go out on the street,” says FDNY Probationary Paramedic Brian Romaner, who graduated as Academic Achiever of his class. “There is no better feeling than seeing your medical interventions help a person in need. I have always loved doing this work and I am proud to be a member of the FDNY.”

Among the diverse group of graduates, seven different languages are spoken, including Albanian, Mandarin, and Spanish. They will be assigned to units throughout the city.
