On Thursday, October 12th, FDNY hosted a Bureau of Fire Prevention Recognition Ceremony at FDNY HQ.
29 Fire Protection Inspectors were recognized for their outstanding work for the Department and New York City.
FDNY Fire Protection Inspectors ensure life and fire safety by inspecting buildings and ensuring compliance of New York City regulations.
Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro congratulated the men and women honored at the ceremony and highlighted their role in achieving the Department’s record of the lowest number of fire deaths ever.
“Today, thanks to the extensive efforts by our Bureau of Fire Prevention, and all of our inspectors in every unit, from the high rise unit to the our fuel safety unit, to our construction, demolition and abatement unit - and every unit in between, we continue to make a very dangerous job that much safer,” said Commissioner Nigro.
“We’re the largest Fire Department in the country – and we function as a team - but so much of what we do comes down to each individual accomplishing their goals every day,” said Chief of Department James E. Leonard. “Our team is only as strong as the people to comprise it - and you all make our team that much stronger.”
“I’m very honored and blessed to work with such a great team with mentors that guided me throughout the year,” said FDNY Fire Protection Inspector Emanuela Chihaia. “This job is so important because what we do in the field is mitigate any potential risks – we take preventative measures to ensure the protection of life and property for all citizens in New York and I’m very excited to continue on with such a rewarding career.”
Cirissa Spencer, Community Coordinator in the Bureau of Fire Prevention was one of 29 members recognized. “In the Bureau of Fire Prevention’s Shelter Task Force, my job is to coordinate inspections to ensure families staying in shelters during their transition are living in buildings that are up to code and safe,” said Spencer. “It feels great to be recognized by your colleagues for your hard work. We work together as a team to accomplish whatever is necessary to keep the people of New York City safe.”
Supervising Fire Inspector Joseph Rogers, a 12-year veteran of the FDNY states, “I enjoy putting my uniform on every day and knowing that what I do here impacts people’s lives on both the civilian and uniformed side,” said Fire Inspector Rogers. “Our inspections ensure that first responders and the people of New York have multiple ways of escaping in case of a fire and that no apartments are being illegally converted.”
