FDNY Fire Marshals Arrest Suspect for Arson Fire at Staten Island Car Wash

June 10, 2016

Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced today that Fire Marshals have arrested a suspect in connection with a deliberately set fire at a car wash on Staten Island.

“We have zero tolerance for anyone who commits arson.  It is a dangerous criminal act which shows no regard for the safety and well-being of FDNY members and the people we are sworn to protect,” said Commissioner Nigro.  “Thanks to the excellent investigative work by our Fire Marshals, the suspect wanted for senselessly putting the lives of FDNY Firefighters in danger has been apprehended.”

Willie Mandrell, 54, of Staten Island, was arrested by Fire Marshals for setting a fire at the Touchless Auto Wash, located at 1995 Forest Avenue on Staten Island.  Mr. Mandrell, an employee at the car wash, is alleged to have set the fire in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 2, 2016 to cover up a burglary at the location.

Firefighters were called at 5:39 a.m. and arrived in three minutes.  In all, 12 units, comprised of 60 Firefighters responded to bring the fire under control.  The one-story building was heavily damaged in the fire, and 10 Firefighters suffered injuries.

Fire Marshals responded to the scene and began an extensive investigation; conducting interviews with witnesses, canvassing the area and searching for surveillance video that may have captured the fire and suspect.  Following an extensive investigation, the suspect was arrested by Fire Marshals and charged with arson, burglary and reckless endangerment; as well as assault charges for the injuries sustained by FDNY Firefighters who fought the fire.
