Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Dr. Feniosky Peña-Mora will break ground on the site of the future home of FDNY Rescue Company 2, at 1815 Sterling Place in Brooklyn on July 28 at 12 p.m. Rescue Company 2 is one of FDNY’s five rescue companies – specially-trained units that respond to a variety of unique emergencies in addition to fires; including building collapses, high-angle rescues, hazardous materials incidents and water rescues.
“We are proud to break ground on a state-of-the-art new home for Brooklyn’s Rescue Company 2. This firehouse will be a leader in energy efficiency, moving our city closer to an environmentally sustainable and resilient future. With ample space for tools and a training facility on the roof, this firehouse will be the impressive space that New York’s bravest deserve,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“Rescue Company 2 has a proud and storied history of bravery and service,” said Commissioner Nigro. “The construction of their new state-of-the-art home in Brooklyn will mean more opportunities for the highly-skilled members assigned there to train for the wide variety of life-threatening emergencies they respond to each and every day.”
“In keeping with Mayor de Blasio’s vision for a healthier, more sustainable and resilient city, DDC is proud to partner with FDNY to provide New York City’s Bravest with a state-of-the-art training and housing facility that is energy efficient and can serve as a beacon of community engagement,” said DDC commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora. “The design aims to reduce carbon emissions, conserve water and contribute to a healthy urban environment through integrating environmentally responsible practices. A geothermal system, solar water heating system, permeable pavement and a green roof will contribute to this goal and strengthen the City’s commitment to building sustainable, environmentally friendly buildings.”
The construction plans continue the Department’s goal of sustainable and energy efficient facilities with several green elements incorporated into the design; including a solar water heating system, 100% LED lighting with motion sensors to reduce electricity usage, and a green roof to help mitigate storm water runoff from the site. The total cost for construction and design is $32 million.
Rescue Company 2 was formed in 1925 to establish special rescue capability in the borough of Brooklyn. Originally located at 160 Carlton Avenue, the current home of Rescue Company 2 is at 1472 Bergen Street. The company is staffed daily by five Firefighters and one officer and responds to emergencies throughout the borough, and into neighboring boroughs, as needed.
