Anthony Miranda was appointed New York City’s sheriff in May 2022. Sheriff Miranda has served in various positions throughout the course of his distinguished career in law enforcement. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1982, serving first as a detective in the Organized Crime Control Bureau and Detective Bureau and later as a sergeant in several areas, including the Street Narcotics Enforcement Unit, Community Policing, Internal Affairs Bureau, and Patrol Service Bureau. Following his tenure with NYPD, Sheriff Miranda served as chief of police and director of security for the Administration of Children’s Services, where he directed and administered agency security operations and advised agency leadership on security matters, threats, vulnerabilities, and various methodologies to mitigate risks to staff and facilities. He later served as a law enforcement consultant, providing expert guidance to justices, lawyers, and civilians on policing issues.
The sheriff and his team are charged with a wide range of law enforcement responsibilities, including the duty to preserve the peace and serve and enforce mandates and orders issued from local or state courts, the federal government, foreign countries, the New York City Tax Tribunal, or the commissioner of the Department of Finance. The sheriff executes processes involving the seizure of money or property pursuant to writs, warrants, and court orders; serves civil and criminal process; apprehends fugitives from justice; and escorts persons in civil custody to correctional facilities, hospitals, and court. The Sheriff’s Office enforces all laws and ordinances concerning the trafficking of synthetic narcotics and illegal, untaxed, or counterfeit tobacco products. The sheriff is also responsible for enforcing and preventing the violation of all tax laws and ordinances and all laws and ordinances involving the theft or fraudulent conveyance of real property in New York City.
Sheriff Miranda holds a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, as well as numerous licenses and certifications. He is fluent in Spanish and has received the New York City Council Man of Courage Award and the Albert Einstein International Academy Foundation Peace Medal, among other honors.
