Weigh-in-motion camera violations
The City of New York issues weigh-in-motion violations. The City operates sensors and cameras on the eastbound side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278), from the vicinity of Atlantic Avenue to the vicinity of Sands Street in Brooklyn.
On June 22, 2025, the City expanded enforcement of camera violations for overweight vehicles to the westbound side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway from the vicinity of Sands Street to the vicinity of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

Weigh-in-motion violations are issued to the owner of a vehicle exceeding weight limits on a portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The owner of the vehicle is responsible for the violation in either or both of the following cases:
- The vehicle was observed by the sensor traveling in excess of 10% above the maximum gross weight limit.
- The vehicle was observed by the sensor traveling in excess of 20% above the maximum axle weight limit.
Important information about weigh-in-motion violations
Weigh-in-motion cameras and sensors must be maintained and regularly tested to ensure their accuracy. Specifically:
- The camera must successfully pass a self-test of its functions on the date of occurrence.
- The camera must undergo an annual calibration check, and you are entitled to see a certification of that check upon request.
- The Department of Transportation must provide a certification that the camera was operating properly on the date of occurrence, which you are entitled to see upon request.
- The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is required to periodically calibrate and certify the weigh-in-motion sensors.
- The sensors must be calibrated and certified by law for the weigh-in-motion automated enforcement program.
You have the right to dispute a weigh-in-motion violation at www.nyc.gov/disputeticket. Possible defenses include:
- You have evidence showing that your vehicle was under the weight limit and another vehicle triggered the camera.
- You have evidence, such as a police report, that your vehicle was reported stolen, and not recovered, before the violation occurred.
- You have evidence showing that you sold or transferred the vehicle prior to the violation.

Vehicles that exceed the allowable weight limits must apply for an over-dimensional vehicle permit from the Department of Transportation.
