HPD starts the process of creating affordable housing and neighborhood amenities at 388 Hudson Street with a tabling event at the Hudson Park Library on April 26

NEW YORK, NY – The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is seeking community input on the development of new affordable housing and neighborhood amenities at 388 Hudson Street in Lower Manhattan.  

There are many opportunities for New Yorkers to get involved in identifying priorities for housing, retail, services, and community amenities for the site including workshops, conversations with community members, and regular updates throughout this spring and summer.  

 “388 Hudson offers New York City a rare opportunity to build affordable housing in the heart of downtown Manhattan,” said HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Jr. “Every neighborhood must be part of the solution to our housing crisis, and we look forward to working with the community to deliver the best possible outcome for this neighborhood and the city as a whole.” 

388 Hudson Street is a City-owned site with approximately 13,622 square-feet of land that will be converted into a new mixed-use housing development. The 11,377 square-foot southern portion of the lot hosts critical infrastructure for the city’s water system and is currently undergoing a separate engagement and design process for its future use as public open space. The housing site sits next to a school building, and is across the street from a public park and commercial office buildings. The surrounding area is amenity-rich including clusters of restaurants, grocery stores, other retail space, and is close to major transit hubs.  

The development of City-owned land for affordable housing is initiated through a competitive process that asks developers to respond to a set of goals and guidelines for the site and community priorities. The community engagement process will culminate with an official report that summarizes the community’s input. The Community Visioning Report will be attached to the Request for Proposals and development teams are strongly encouraged to respond to the report. HPD will evaluate how well development teams incorporate the community vision as part of the selection process.

I encourage the community get involved and share their vision for the site,” said Council Member Erik Bottcher. “Developments like this are essential to addressing the affordable housing crisis that is threatening the very ability of New York City's working class to remain here. I look forward to working with HPD and Community Board 2 to ensure this project is a success.”
