Immigrant Heritage Week 2022
Originally started in 2004, Immigrant Heritage Week (IHW) is a week-long celebration during which we commemorate the legacy of April 17, 1907, the day in New York City history on which the largest number of immigrants – 11,000 – entered the U.S. through Ellis Island. In New York City, the ultimate city of immigrants, we have always known that immigrants are essential. In 2021, the city entered its second year of the COVID-19 pandemic and focused its efforts on recovery programs. While the City was slowly reopening, immigrant New Yorkers never stopped working. Representing a substantial portion of our essential workforce, immigrant New Yorkers were on the frontlines of fighting the pandemic and keeping the City running and stepped up to fill needs in our communities. Our city came to rely and continues to rely on immigrants.
During this 18th Annual IHW–Monday, April 11 through Sunday, April 17–the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) is proud to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions of immigrant New Yorkers with our theme Immigrant New York: Rebuilding Together.
This year, IHW includes in-person and virtual events organized by community partners. We invite you to join us in celebrating our immigrant communities, honoring New York City's legacy as a city of immigrants, and engaging your communities through the events below.

In celebration of Immigrants Heritage Week, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York invites you to join our online bingo game from April 11-17 to discover elements of Taiwanese heritage throughout the city and in our everyday lives. Today, approximately 150,000 Taiwanese call the Greater New York area home, and they have brought their fair share of influence to the Big Apple! From yummy bubble tea to electronics brands, explore the city to see how many Taiwanese elements you can cross off your bingo card. Snap pictures and share them with us by messaging @TaiwanInNewYork on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Those who cross off at least one row will be eligible to enter our lucky draw and win Taiwan-themed prizes!

Ramadan is a holy month of worship, study of the Quran, prayer, and fasting. Ramadan occurs during the month in which Muslims believe the Quran began to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is a joyous celebration for Muslims. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. We are delighted to invite you to Iftar in the City 2022, a festive dinner celebration that will bring together NYC's diverse communities during the month of Ramadan. We'll join Muslim New Yorkers and attendees from every faith and walks of life as they break their daily fast and break bread together. Generation after generation, America's changing population has changed its musical landscape. Join us for a conversation that explores the diversity of Latin music and culture, and how these rhythms and traditions have been integral to American music from its historical roots to the present day. Moderated by Julyssa Lopez. Panelists include Linda Briceño, Carlos Chirinos, Jaime Lozano, and Sofia Rei who will share their musical influences, talk about how cross-cultural experiences have shaped their artistry, and consider how Latin culture is represented in the American music industry through a critical lens. An open dialogue on how the global exchange of art and culture continues to expand and define the American songbook.

Colombian musician and composer Edmar Castañeda, one of the leaders of the next generation of harp players, quickly corrects such presumptions with an intoxicatingly fluid, impossibly intricate and swinging performance style apt to spark dance and shouts of joy. Inspired equally from the joropo folk of his Bogotá roots and from his love for contemporary and Latin jazz, spiced with excursions into experimentalism and pop.

Washington Irving branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and The Cultural Immigrant Initiative present to our youngest patrons Repertorio Español Theatre who will be performing a bilingual puppet show, Los 3 cochinitos/The 3 Little Pigs. The show is very interactive with a positive message for youngsters about not giving up and working together. (Suitable for ages 4 - 9)
Afterwards, Repertorio Theatre will provide materials for a puppet-making workshop. The show runs about 35 minutes and the workshop is about the same length.

Born in India, raised in Canada, and based out of New York City, the multiple JUNO Award-winning singer and composer Kiran Ahluwalia's globetrotting background reflects the adventurous polyglot spirit of her music. An acclaimed musician with roots in Indian classical, Sufi, Ghazal, and Punjabi folk music, Ahluwalia's free-ranging artistic curiosity can be clearly heard in her newest album, 7 Billion, a travelogue overflowing with the sounds of West African Blues, contemporary jazz, and American R&B. Supported by a five-piece ensemble led by her musical and life partner, the award- winning guitarist Rez Abbasi, Ahluwalia's live shows are entertaining explorations across her creative world.

This is the holy month of Ramadan. At the end of the performances, there will be Iftar, the evening meal with which Muslims end daily Ramadan fast at sunset.
