Thursday, June 1st, 2023, kicks off the start of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs’ Immigrant Heritage Month (IHM) celebration where we honor our theme:
WE LOVE IMMIGRANT NYC
National Immigrant Heritage Month
June marks the start of National Immigrant Heritage Month and we continue to celebrate the endless contributions of immigrant New Yorkers.
This year, the celebrations kicked off during the start of Immigrant Heritage Week in April 2023. The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) will continue to highlight and promote community partner events until June 30th in honor of #ImmigrantHeritageMonth.
For the first time in MOIA history, we have released a series of illustrations depicting various NYC immigrant enclave communities. These illustrations are also one way we celebrate & highlight the endless contributions, rich histories, and unique cultures of our city’s diverse immigrant communities – reasons why WE LOVE IMMIGRANT NYC.
Join us in celebrating our immigrant communities, honoring New York City's legacy as a city of immigrants, and engaging your communities through the events below.
We also encourage you to share out the graphics in our social media toolkit.
Immigrant Heritage Week 2023
Originally started in 2004, Immigrant Heritage Week is a week-long celebration during which we commemorate the 115th anniversary of April 17, 1907, the day in New York City history on which the largest number of immigrants – 11,000 – entered the U.S. through Ellis Island.

About the Event:Come Listen to African Story told at its best. Folktales were normally recited, being the last assignment before bedtime. In this project, the folklore will help the parents maintain their connection with Africa to preserve their lineage and make them continue the heritage of shared value, a way of life with their children, and their non-African friends in general. African Life Center (ALC) has a cultural linguistic literate team with the ability to participate fluently in formal and informal activities. Therefore, exploring and using the diverse African cultural and linguistic competency resources to serve the community. ALC’s work with the community deepens the community’s understanding of the traditions, norms, activities, and historical background of African culture and the interplay in a foreign land.
