Running started for the New York City Department of Correction in 1979. On this year, the department held their first race which was called “Rikers Romp”. In 1996 C.O Iran Colon started the “Department of Correction Running Club” who competed up until around 1998. More than 15 years later in March 2016, Head Coach and President Indira Avila officially started “NYCD Boldest Running Club”.
Boldest Running Club kicked off their first season at a local race in Flushing Meadow Park on May 14, 2016. We are affiliated with New York’s Road Runners club and compete at New York’s most popular arenas and events such as the Armory, Icahn Stadium, NYC Marathon and obstacle course races. The club has had a positive impact on the department as they helped bring back the annual Rikers Island 5k Challenge Run. The club’s mission is to promote health and fitness within law enforcement and the local community. We strive to provide a friendly environment for all our members while pushing to bring out the best in ourselves.
