Stephanie Suarez, ELA Teacher, NYC Junior Ambassadors Educator

Stephanie is an English Language Arts teacher at the Magnet School for Math and Science Inquiry (P.S./I.S. 192 ) in Brooklyn, New York. She is also a member of the inaugural NYC Junior Ambassadors cohort. As a lover of travel and literature, she exposes her students to different cultures, identities, and politics through poetry, memoirs, and international media that highlight problems, as well as, areas of achievements. She also emphasizes the importance of being global citizens and taking part in global progress efforts. 

As a NYC Junior Ambassadors educator, she focuses on providing her students with a rich literary and media literacy curriculum that develops curiosity, empathy, and compassion with regard to refugees. Students are given the opportunity to analyze, question, and research big ideas around issues of war and displacement. Her students also create a plan of action to inform their peers and community as well as raise funds to provide humanitarian relief through non-governmental organizations.

For the past few years, she has taken yearly trips with Global Exploration for Educators (GEEO), a non-profit organization that sends educators across the globe and provides tours of major landmarks, archaeological sites, and educational institutions. Stephanie is very active in her community. She volunteers at the Brooklyn Teen Challenge’s food and the Brooklyn Community Services. She also participates in a garden sanctuary beautification project benefiting women suffering from mental illness in East New York. Finally, Stephanie works with teen moms at Covenant House in Manhattan and is part of Liberty City, a non-profit organization that serves the local community.  

Stephanie received her B.A and M.A. in English Education from Brooklyn College (CUNY). She takes pride in being a graduate of NYC public schools and in being a NYC teacher.
