NYPD Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for June 2022

July 7, 2022

For the month of June 2022, the number of overall shooting incidents again declined in New York City compared with June 2021, continuing the downward trend in gun violence in the first half of the calendar year. Citywide shooting incidents decreased by 24.2% (125 v. 165), marked by declines in every patrol borough except northern Queens – where the tally rose by two incidents in June 2022 compared with June 2021. Additionally, the number of murders declined for the month by 31.6% (26 v. 38) compared to the same period last year. Overall hate crimes also declined by 8% (59 v. 64) compared to June 2021.

There were 355 gun arrests in June 2022, bringing the total number of citywide gun arrests in 2022 to 2,381 – a 4.0% increase compared with the 2,290 gun arrests through the first six months of 2021. In its continuing effort to eradicate gun violence, the NYPD has seized more than 3,700 firearms year-to-date in 2022 – at a time when gun arrests are at a 27-year high.

Overall index crime in New York City increased by 31.1% in June 2022 compared with June 2021 (11,073 v. 8,448). Six of the seven major index-crime categories saw increases, driven by a 41.0% increase in grand larceny (4,467 v. 3,168), a 36.1% increase in robbery (1,548 v. 1,137), and a 33.8% rise in burglary (1,279 v. 956).

“The NYPD’s work to drive down gun violence in New York City is taking hold – with the number of shootings decreasing across all five boroughs,” said Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell. “We have taken thousands of guns off the streets – both traditional firearms and ghost guns – and made significant illegal-weapon interdictions along with our law enforcement partners. We are encouraged by this downward trend in gun violence as summer gets underway, but realize that we must remain focused on our critical public-safety mission – the lives of New Yorkers depend on it.”

The decline in shootings in June 2022 continues the deep reductions for the second quarter of the year, which is driving an overall annual reduction in shooting incidents. It reflects the combined sum of the NYPD’s gun-violence reduction strategies – highlighted by the Neighborhood Safety Teams, the Gun Violence Suppression Division, the Major Case Field Intelligence Team, and more.

In mid-March, we rolled out our new Neighborhood Safety Teams – and these hand-picked, specially-trained officers made immediate, positive contributions to public safety. Citywide, NST members have taken around 150 illegal firearms out of our neighborhoods, and this brave work ensures that these deadly weapons will never harm another New Yorker.

Additionally, NYPD officers work day and night to develop and investigate intelligence-based, long-term cases focused on the very few New Yorkers willing to pick up a gun and use it. The NYPD’s Gun Violence Suppression Section continues to build these cases by locating and seizing illegal firearms – and in many instances they can do so before those guns ever end up on New York City’s streets.

The Major Case Field Intelligence Team carries out specialized investigations to stop the flow of personally-make firearms – also known as “ghost guns.” These investigations begin at the point of the online purchase of ghost-gun kits, additional parts, and other means to assemble these weapons at home – and they result in search warrants and seizures at a rate never before seen.

All of these efforts employ the department’s precision-policing philosophy to keep New Yorkers safe, and they work to keep the focus of the criminal justice system where it belongs: on the victims.
