NYPD Announces Executive Promotions to Chief of Detectives and Chief of Crime Control Strategies

April 6, 2018

The NYPD announced today promotions to two of the Department's top executive positions, Chief of Detectives and Chief of Crime Control Strategies. Chief Dermot Shea, who served most recently as Chief of Crime Control Strategies, will be promoted to Chief of Detectives. Chief Shea will succeed Robert Boyce, who is retiring with 36 years of service to the Department. Deputy Chief Lori Pollock, who served most recently as the Commanding Officer of the Candidate Assessment Division, will be promoted to Chief of Crime Control Strategies. The promotions are effective Monday, April 16, 2018.

"The NYPD made history in 2017, and in 2018 we're building on our historic achievements by keeping New Yorkers across the city safe and building stronger relationships in every neighborhood we serve," said Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill. "Today I'm announcing two executive-level appointments that will ensure the Department continues to set the standard for effective, efficient policing in this nation—and around the world."

Chief Shea has spent the last four-plus years as, first, Deputy Commissioner of Operations and, then, Chief of Crime Control Strategies – where he has been responsible for analyzing citywide crime trends and developing the Department's crime-control plans and procedures. His work has been instrumental in the record-low crime rates that the City of New York City has seen in recent years. During his 27-year career, Chief Shea has also served as Commanding Officer of Operations, the 44th and 50th Precincts, and as Executive Officer of the 47th Precinct and Detective Borough Manhattan South. He also worked in the 24th, 46th, and 52nd Precincts, and the Narcotics Division.

Chief Pollock, who has more than three decades of service to the NYPD, most recently served as Commanding Officer of the Candidate Assessment Division, where she was responsible for background investigations and hiring 3,000 to 5,000 new NYPD employees each year. Chief Pollock has also served as the Commanding Officer of Detective Borough Manhattan North, the Commanding Officer of Narcotics Borough Manhattan North and Executive Officer of Narcotics Borough Brooklyn North. She has also worked in the Internal Affairs Bureau; PSA 7; the Manhattan North Burglary Team; and the 10th, 19th, 23rd and Central Park Precincts.
