The NYPD today announced the appointment of Jeff Schlanger as Counsel to Police Commissioner. As a member of Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill’s executive team, Schlanger will provide legal and strategic advice to the Commissioner, working on special projects at his direction.
“Jeff has not only served in executive positions in both the public and private sectors including in police department oversight across the country, but he has always done so with a collaborative approach,” Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said. “Jeff understands how critical the relationship is between the police and the public we serve. He will be an invaluable member of our team as we work to build deeper bonds with the community, and I am proud to welcome Jeff to the NYPD.”
“It is an honor to serve, again, this time at the NYPD,” Counsel Jeff Schlanger said. “I will bring all I have learned in both the public and private sector to continue helping NYPD leadership bring safety and fairness to all New Yorkers.”
Schlanger previously served as President of the Exiger Advisory, a multinational consulting firm where, among other things he led the Comprehensive Review of the University Of Cincinnati Police Department, conducted in response to a fatal officer involved shooting. Schlanger was later selected by the University of Cincinnati as independent monitor of the implementation of the recommendations of the review, and has continued in that role up until the time of his appointment. From 2001 through 2009 he was the Primary Deputy Monitor for the Los Angeles Police, leading the day to day operations of what is widely regarded as the most successful police monitorship ever imposed by the US Department of Justice.
Schlanger began his career as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office serving from 1978 to 1990, where he led the investigation and prosecution of the Westies, which in turn led to the investigation and prosecution of John Gotti and members of the Gambino Crime Family. Schlanger returned to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office as its Chief of Staff from 2014 to 2015. In this capacity he oversaw the office’s day-to-day operations, and handled its “Extreme Collaboration” initiative with the NYPD. Schlanger followed his initial years as a prosecutor at Kroll Associates, where he was president of Kroll Government Services, and where, at the request of city and state governments, he conducted numerous police department related investigations including at the Tennessee Highway Patrol, San Francisco Police Department, and Austin Police Department. Later as president and CEO of KeyPoint Government Solutions, Schlanger oversaw federal security clearance investigations conducted on behalf of the Office of Personnel Management and other federal agencies.
Schlanger is a graduate of SUNY Binghamton and New York University School of Law. He and his wife Teresa, a professor of nutrition and dietetics at Westchester Community College, live on the Upper East side, and have three grown children.
