NYPD Focused on Addressing Crime Upticks in Month of July NYPD, City Officials Prepare to Host "National Night Out Against Crime" Events Citywide Tonight

The NYPD announced today that year-to-date index crime is down by more than 2,000 complaints, or about -4.0%, and there are year-to-date declines in every major crime category. While year-to-date index crime is down, total index crime for July 2019 (8,809) has increased by 41 complaints, or +0.5%, compared to July 2018 (8,768). Murder for the month of July 2019 (31) increased +10.7%, or +3 victims, compared to July 2018 (28). Shooting incidents for July 2019 (87) decreased by -2.2%, compared to July 2018 (89), however, year-to-date shootings are up by 22 incidents, or +5.2%.

The department continues to address violence through Neighborhood Policing, by engaging community members and building stronger bonds with them. The approach also includes precision policing, Summer All-Out and other targeted deployments, gun takedowns and close collaboration with the District Attorneys on firearms cases.

"As we get ready to celebrate National Night Out Against Crime tonight, everyone with a stake in their community – and that's all of us – should come out, meet your Neighborhood Coordination Officers and the other men and women who work and live in your community,” said Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill. "To sustain record-low levels of crime in New York City, and to further reduce violence, we must all come together – it is a shared responsibility. At events across the City tonight, get to know one another, and talk about ways to enhance public safety, solve problems and have fun. These are going to be enjoyable, safe, community-building events."

On Tuesday August 6, 2019, communities in New York and throughout the United States will celebrate the 36th Anniversary of National Night Out Against Crime. National Night Out was designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit, policecommunity partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that the communities are organized and are fighting back. All precincts, police service areas and some transit districts, in conjunction with community residents, will be hosting events borough wide.

Participants can look forward to crime prevention information and presentations, meeting McGruff the crime dog, receiving Kid Care ID Kits, Operation Safe Child and having NYPD units such as the Canine, Harbor, Emergency Service and Highway Units on display. Adults can also sign up for volunteer programs such as the Auxiliary Police Program, while young people can sign up for the Law Enforcement Exploring Program, as well as others. Entertainment, giveaways, contests and refreshments will be provided. The public can call 311 for a list of event locations or contact their local Precinct, Transit District or Police Service Area.
