Chief of Department on the Police-involved Shooting in the 7th Precinct, Manhattan

February 8, 2019

Remarks as prepared for Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

The information I'm about to share is preliminary as this incident just happened a few hours ago.

Uniformed Officers from the 7 Precinct responded to a domestic dispute this morning just before 7 AM at 227 Cherry Street, a large apartment building. Both officers were wearing body-worn cameras, which I have viewed.

Officers were met at the door of the apartment on the 8th floor by the 911 caller, who stated the other occupant was in the rear of the apartment. As the officers entered and began to call out to this person, that individual was located in a closet.

This individual was calm and complaint while being escorted by officers toward the hallway.

Suddenly, this individual broke away from the officers, grabbed a large knife from the kitchen area, and ran toward the 911 caller. As the knife-wielding suspect began stabbing the other occupant, officers discharged their firearms, striking the armed suspect and ending the attack.

Our officers immediately began to render aid, calling for an ambulance and performing CPR.

The suspect was transported to Beekman Downtown Hospital, and was pronounced dead at 8:01 A.M. The victim was taken to an area hospital and is being treated for slash wounds to the right side of the face and left shoulder, as well as puncture wound to the right shoulder.

Fortunately, the victim is in stable condition and is not likely to die. Our preliminary investigation shows there is a history of domestic violence between these two individuals. And there is a recently issued valid order of protection in place against the deceased individual.

The investigation is ongoing and we will share further details when they become available.
