About NYC Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency

How do we prepare for the future?

New York City built a foundation for long-term sustainable planning with initiatives like PlaNYC 2030

Even with so many preventative measures in place, Sandy was a wake-up call. The Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency (SIRR) addressed how we rebuild New York City to be more resilient in the wake of Sandy with a long-term focus on two main tasks:

  • Improving citywide infrastructure and building resilience
    • SIRR's Citywide Infrastructure and Built Environment Team focused on a system-by-system analysis of how to improve citywide infrastructure and building resilience
  • Rebuilding locally
    • SIRR's Community Rebuilding and Resiliency Team looked at geographic areas most impacted by Sandy in order to develop plans to rebuild resiliently

A Climate Analysis Team and an Outreach Team aided both of these teams to integrate the best information on our risks and engage public stakeholders at every level.
