After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Binghamton University, where Dave managed the school's record store, he spent twelve years as a retail research analyst for Goldman, Sachs & Co. In 1999, Dave founded Uncommon Goods, a pioneering website selling creatively designed products from independent makers.
Dave led Uncommon Goods to become a founding B Corp in 2007, reflecting his focus on delivering a positive social and environmental impact, in addition to generating profits. The company is independently owned and has taken a “slow money” approach to its business; it has grown gradually, provides stock options to all 200+ year-round team members, operates under one roof in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and pays a starting wage of $20 for seasonal workers (year-round workers earn more). These practices contributed to Uncommon Goods being named a 2018 Forbes Small Giant.
Dave has been actively involved in the successful legislation to provide New Yorkers with Paid Family Leave and a higher minimum wage.
Dave is a 4th generation New Yorker who helped found and lead Comprehensive Youth Development, a non-profit that supports economically disadvantaged students at three NYC public high schools, where he now serves as Chair of the Board of Advisors. He also led a successful effort to restore a neighborhood park (gulickpark.org) on NYC’s Lower East Side
