Since 1983, the Public Design Commission has recognized outstanding public projects with its Annual Awards for Excellence in Design. The winning projects are selected from the hundreds of submissions reviewed by the Commission the previous year. The award ceremony is typically held in a recently completed building that embodies what we hope can be achieved by all public architecture: spaces that inspire us towards a better future.
The Public Design Commission defines design excellence as championing multi-faceted projects that are representative and supportive of the lived experience of all New Yorkers. We have awarded eleven projects reviewed in 2023 that demonstrate the impact that our public spaces, landscapes, and civic buildings can have on improving the quality of life in our city.
